Obscure glass is glass which you cannot see through but allows light to enter the home. This can include patterned glass, textured glass or glass that is frosted. Obscure glass applications include doors and windows, shower screens, glass features, balustrades, louvres and some furniture. Below is a list of our common obscure glass types and samples.
Cathedral – A type of obscure glass with a bubble-like pattern. Diffuses light strongly so images cannot be seen clearly, but maximum light transmission is achieved.
Flemish – a type of obscure glass with a turtle shell like pattern. Diffuses light moderately, images cannot be seen clearly, but silhouettes made out through the glass.
Kosciusko – a type of obscure glass with a jellybean like pattern. Diffuses light strongly so images cannot be seen clearly, but maximum light transmission is achieved.
Satinlite – obscure glass that has tiny squares throughout the glass. Optimises maximum light transmission with high levels of image diffusion
Spotswood – obscure glass that has a pattern which looks like small dots. High levels of image diffusion with high levels of light transparency
Gluechip – Obscure glass that has a fern like leaf pattern on the glass which has moderate level of image diffusion with high level of light transparency
Kasumi – similar pattern to Spotswood but with larger dots. High levels of image diffusion with high levels of light transparency
Narrow reed – obscure glass with long vertical lines the length of the glass or a ribbed pattern. Strong image diffusion and high light transparency
Translucent – An obscure glass that has a milky white look which provides maximum image diffusion and good light transparency.
